Pediculicide resistance
- if both adult and young lice are both present 24 hours after the application of a pediculicide then a diagnosis of resistance is made
- if only young lice are detected then this does not indicate resistance because some eggs may still hatch out after use of insecticide
- if only old lice are seen then this represents reinfestation
- there have been reports of resistance to malathion, permethrin and phenothrin in some parts of the country
- check local guidelines regarding prescribing guidance
