Pediculicide resistance

  • if both adult and young lice are both present 24 hours after the application of a pediculicide then a diagnosis of resistance is made

  • if only young lice are detected then this does not indicate resistance because some eggs may still hatch out after use of insecticide

  • if only old lice are seen then this represents reinfestation

  • there have been reports of resistance to malathion, permethrin and phenothrin in some parts of the country

  • check local guidelines regarding prescribing guidance
