  • patients are usually more than 40 years old at presentation

  • there may be a history of preceding joint disorder or pain - this may especially be true in young patients presenting with this disorder

  • pain - insidious onset, progressive increase over months or years, exacerbated by exertion, relieved by rest, worse at night

  • stiffness - worse after period of rest

  • in advanced disease there may be swelling and deformity

  • the symptoms of OA may be intermittent, with periods of remission lasting for months

  • OA is not associated with any systemic manifestations
