Vertebral body
The vertebral body is the most anterior, ovoid and dense part of the vertebra that has a key role in weight transmission down the spinal column. The term centrum is sometimes used synonymously with the vertebral body; they are different on the basis of development.
Relations:
- superior & inferior: intervertebral disc spanning intervertebral joint
- anterior: anterior longitudinal ligament
- posterior: basivertebral veins, posterior longitudinal ligament and spinal canal
- posterolateral: pedicle of vertebral arch
- lateral: costal facet(s) in relevant vertebrae
- posteroinferior: spinal nerve through intervertebral foramen
