Most hand infections are secondary to penetrating injury:

  • splinters
  • laceration primarily or secondarily infected
  • penetrating trauma
  • bites
  • blisters
  • hair folliculitis
  • crush injury
  • infection at site of hand dermatosis
  • drug abuse
  • abrasion
  • idiopathic: in this group, forgotten trauma is probably the cause
