Osteoarthritis of the hip may be primary, where no underlying cause is discovered, or secondary. It may develop in a relatively young adult as the sequel to congenital subluxation, coxa vara - a complication of slipped femoral epiphysis - acetabular deformity or trauma. Rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, and Paget's disease are possible causes of osteoarthritis of the hip in older patients.
