Clinical features
The clinical features of neuralgic amyotrophy are:
- the patient usually complains of the sudden onset of an intense pain in the shoulder and arm followed in a few days by muscular weakness and wasting
- weakness is usually proximal but may affect the entire arm
- occasionally, both arms are affected simultaneously
- sensory features are less apparent and occur in 50% of cases - sensation tends to be lost over the outer aspect of the shoulder, usually follows the pain, and may occur without subsequent wasting
- there is usually reflex loss
