OA (endemic)
Some populations show an extremely high incidence of osteoarthritis.
Examples of endemic osteoarthritis include:
Kashin-Beck disease:
- found in northern Russia and China
- affects 8% of local population
- caused by the destruction of cartilage following ingestion of the rye fungus, Fusarium sporotrichiella
- joints affected include fingers, elbows, knees and ankles
Mseleni joint disease:
- found in the Tsonga people of East Africa
- commonly affects the hip joint amongst others
- caused by congenital hip dysplasia syndromes
