Investigation
Often diagnosis is made on history and examination. If there is doubt then consider:
- plain lateral Xray is generally taken - this excludes a stress fracture, erosions due to bursitis, or rare bony causes of inferior heel pain. A heel spur is not diagnostic of plantar fasciitis.
- full blood count and ESR
Other tests occasionally used in the investigation of inferior heel pain include isotope scanning, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography, electrophysiological studies.
