The conventional treatment is to avoid the stressful activity for 8-10 weeks. Then there is a GRADUAL return to the activity. For example a road runner who suffered a stress fracture should gradually increase his weekly mileage from about 20-25% of his normal training load; also he should try and run on grass during his rehabilitation period of training. If any symptoms reappear then the training load is too great.
