Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis
Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an acute demyelinating disorder characterised by small foci of demyelination with a peri-venous distribution throughout the brain and spinal cord.
Children are predominantly affected, yet adult cases may occur. ADEM is characterized by demyelination in the brain and spinal cord, and occasionally the optic nerve, due to inflammation that occurs in response to a preceding infection or immunization.
