Adenine nucleotide carrier system
The adenine nucleotide carrier system is a protein antiport present within the inner mitochondrial membrane. ATP is transferred outwards in return for ADP passage inwards. This adenine nucleotide traffic is associated with the loss of 1 unit of negative charge. To make good this loss, energy must be constantly expended.
The carrier system is essential to the generation of ATP via oxidative phosphorylation.
