  • chest radiography:
    • hyperinflation
    • ground glass reticular pattern

  • lung function tests show a restrictive defect

  • broncho-alveolar lavage excludes infection and malignancy and may demonstrate increased lymphocyte, polymorphonuclear cell and foamy macrophage counts
