Baclofen in the treatment of spasticity

  • baclofen is a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) analogue - it reduces the release of excitatory transmitters in the spinal cord via the inhibition of firing of alpha- and gamma-motor neurones

  • there is evidence that baclofen reduces the severity and frequency of clonus and spasticity (1)

  • side effects include confusion, hypotonia, muscle weakness, fatigue and drowsiness. Abrupt withdrawal of this drug can result in visual hallucinations, cardiac arrhythmias and convulsions
