Cerebellar ataxia

Authoring team

Malfunction of the cerebellum itself, its input or its outflow results in a characteristic ataxia:

  • broad-based clumsy gait
  • difficulty walking heel-to-toe
  • difficulty standing on one leg
  • difficulty in the heel-shin-knee test
  • intention tremor and uncoordination in the finger-nose test

Nystagmus, dysarthria and hypotonia are also characteristic of cerebellar disease.
