21,106 patients with acute ischaemic stroke were given either 160 mg aspirin or placebo daily for four weeks.

The mortality rate at one month was slightly but not significantly lower than in the placebo group (3.3% versus 3.9%).

There was no difference in the overall death rates or severe disability between the groups.
