  • embolic or thrombotic occlusion of the posterior cerebral arteries
  • hypoxic or ischaemic encephalopathy
  • Creutzfeld-Jakob disease
  • progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy
  • bilateral infiltrating tumours e.g. glioma
