Aetiology
Fasciculation may be a feature of:
- motor neurone disease
- poliomyelitis
- motor root compression, for example cervical spondylosis
- any motor neuropathy, for example caused by malignancy
- acquired myopathies, for example thyrotoxicosis, polymyositis
- electrolyte disturbance such as hyponatraemia or hypomagnesaemia; hypocalcaemia or hypokalaemia may cause cramps or tetany
- benign fasciculation, for example myokymia
- drugs, such as anticholinesterases or lithium
