Aetiology
Common causes of hypertensive encephalopathy include:
- malignant hypertension
- uncontrolled hypertension in glomerulonephritis, eclampsia or phaeochromocytoma
- after the ingestion of tyramine-rich foods in patients being treated with monoamine oxidase inhibitors for depression
