Lower motor neurone dysarthria
In this type of dysarthria there is failure of articulation due to muscular weakness resulting from:
- lesions of the brainstem nuclei or cranial nerves numbered VII, IX, X or XII
- progressive bulbar palsy
- Guillan-Barre
- myasthenia gravis
- poliomyelitis
- diphtheria
There is often wasting and fasciculation of the tongue. Palatal and lip movements may be impaired. There may be an associated problem with phonation.
