Aetiology
Causes of neurological respiratory failure include:
- myasthenia gravis
- Guillain-Barre
- polio
- motor neurone disease - progressive and ultimately fatal; poses ethical problems about the management of this particular type of respiratory failure - ventilated in the US, not ventilated in the UK; there are comprehensive arguments in favour of each policy.
