Optic atrophy:

  • is the result of progressive optic nerve disease
  • damage to the ganglion cells and their axons is permanent
  • axon loss reorients the astrocytes within the optic disc, so obscuring the capillaries on the surface and producing the characteristic pallor of atrophy
  • treatment is dependent on the cause
