Nerve sheath cells

Intracranial nerve cell sheath tumours can be divided into:

• neuroma / schwannoma - involving Schwann cells, cranial, nerve roots, or peripheral nerves
  
  
• neurofibroma - tumour of Schwann cells and fibroblasts producing a fusiform expansion through which nerve fibres run. Involves the spinal nerve roots or the peripheral nerves and rarely, the cranial nerves. Has a greater tendency to undergo malignant change than schwannomas and it is associated with Von Recklinghausen's disease.
