Complications

Proliferative vitreoretinopathy is a major complication of detachment and a frequent obstacle to successful surgical repair. It is characterised by fibrovascular membranes which form on both the inner - vitreal - and the outer - photoreceptor - surfaces of the detached retina and the posterior surface of the detached vitreous humour. Contraction of these membranes distorts and elevates the retina.

Complications following surgical procedures include:

• cataract
• glaucoma
• delayed intraocular hemorrhage
• corneal damage (1)
