The energy requirements after a major burn may be twice the normal level. There are a large number of formulae to calculate energy needs including:

  • Curreri:
    • adult daily requirements 25 calories per kilograms plus 40 calories per percent burn
    • children daily 60 calories per kilogram plus 35 calories per percent burn
    • may over-estimate requirements in the elderly
  • Schofield:
    • based on a nomogram of weight, stress and activity
    • recommends energy be given as in the following composition:
      • 50% carbohydrate
      • 30% fat
      • 20% protein
