Energy
The energy requirements after a major burn may be twice the normal level. There are a large number of formulae to calculate energy needs including:
- Curreri:
- adult daily requirements 25 calories per kilograms plus 40 calories per percent burn
- children daily 60 calories per kilogram plus 35 calories per percent burn
- may over-estimate requirements in the elderly
- Schofield:
- based on a nomogram of weight, stress and activity
- recommends energy be given as in the following composition:
- 50% carbohydrate
- 30% fat
- 20% protein
