Management

Authoring team

The management of social phobia consists of:

  • cognitive behavioural therapy

  • pharmacological therapy:
    • beta-blockers may reduce symptoms during feared situations
    • benzodiazepines occasionally may used for short periods - this is because of the risk of dependency
    • SSRI's may be effective in social phobia
      • NICE suggest (1) suggest either escitalopram or sertraline to be the SSRIs to be used in this condition
