There are two types of dip - where the foetal heart rate falls as a result of uterine contraction - seen in cardiotocography.

  • type I dip:
    • the foetal heart rate falls with the contraction and immediately recovers when the contraction in over

  • type II dip:
    • the foetal heart rate falls with the contraction and then takes a considerable time to recover after the contraction has ceased
    • may indicate that intervention is required
