Criteria for the use of forceps
Before forceps are used the following conditions must be met:
- the presentation must be suitable
- there must be full dilatation of the cervix
- the head must be engaged
- the membranes must be ruptured
- the bladder must be empty
- the uterus should be contracting
- the operator should be experienced
- there should be adequate analgesia
- a paediatrician should be on hand
