Disadvantages
Possible disadvantages of general anaesthesia in obstetrics include :-
- fetal depression - due to anaesthetic agents passing the placental barrier - secondary fetal depression due to hypotension or maternal hypoxaemia
- aspiration (often labour ward patients have full stomachs) - Mendelson's syndrome
