Causes of increased levels include:

  • chronic infection
  • IgD myelomas (greatly increased)
  • autoimmune disease

Causes of reduced levels include:

  • hereditary deficiencies
  • acquired immunodeficiencies
  • non-IgD myeloma
  • infancy, early childhood
