The management of major antepartum haemorrhage includes:

  • admit through flying squad
  • check haemoglobin, clotting
  • continuous CTG monitoring
  • cross-match blood
  • establish IV access
  • monitor fluid balance
  • CVP line, urinary catheter
  • urgent ultrasound scan (possible only if clinical situation allows)
  • do not perform vaginal examination - in case of placenta praevia
  • transfuse if necessary
  • sedate if necessary
  • if fetus is alive perform an emergency caesarian section
