Aetiology
Causes include:
- reduced production of amniotic fluid
- failing placental function
- bilateral renal agenesis
- posterior urethral valves
- increased losses of amniotic fluid, as in prolonged rupture of membranes
It is common in pregnancies which have progressed many weeks beyond term.
