Epidemiology

One of the most common ocular disorders encountered by ophthalmologists (1).

Epidemiologic information on its incidence or prevalence is lacking (2).

According to the data of studies carried out regarding blepharitis:

• staphylococcal blepharitis
  • average age of onset was around 42 years
  • more common in women
  • 25% to 50% of patients had keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS, or dry eye syndrome) (1)
• seborrhoeic blepharitis
  • average age of patients was around 50 years
  • prevalence was equal between men and women
  • 95% of patients had seborrhoeic blepharitis while 25-40% had KCS (1)
• meibomian gland disease (MGD)
  • mean age of onset was around 50 years
  • equally common between men and women
  • 20% of MGD patients had acne rosacea and 46% had seborrhoeic dermatitis (1).
