Conjunctivitis is usually bacterial in origin but not uncommonly, is a component of many non-bacterial infections such as measles, rubella, leptospriosis, Reiter's disease and tularaemia.
A persistent conjunctivitis is suggestive of a viral or allergic aetiology.
A purulent acute conjunctivitis may be a rare sequel to a potent infective agent like gonococcus.
Chlamydial conjunctivitis - as trachoma - is a common cause of blindness in tropical and subtropical countries.
