Danazol
It is a testosterone derivative which:
- suppresses LH surge
- inhibits ovarian steroidogenesis
- reduces plasma levels of sex hormone binding globulin
- increases free testosterone - due to reduced SHBG
Danazol may be used in the treatment of endometriosis. It results in a high androgen, low oestrogen environment which does not support the growth of endometriosis. Therapy is for 6-9 months.
It has also been used in the prophylaxis of hereditary angioneurotic oedema.
