Fungal keratitis

Fungal infections of the corneum usually present as presumed bacterial keratitis. There will be no response to topical antibiotics and urgent referral to a specialist centre is required.

• clinical suspicion is essential to diagnosis (1)
• usually caused by Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus and Fusarium sp.(1) (3)
• can be successfully treated with topical amphotericin B 0,2% and natamycin 5% (2)
