Neuroparalytic keratitis
In conditions where the protective eye reflexes are impaired there is an increased incidence of keratitis. The common causes are:
- Bell's palsy - the patient may be unable to close the eye resulting in exposure keratitis
- after herpes zoster ophthalmicus the corneum may be left anaesthetic and susceptible to repeated trauma
