When DEXA measurment is not indicated
Though dual energy X-ray absorptiometry measurement is becoming increasingly available, there is often a considerable waiting-list, there are cost implications and the scan involves exposure to ionising radiation. A scan should therefore perhaps not be requested in the following situations:
- women on HRT with no complications
- those who won't accept treatment
- elderly patients with spondylosis in whom spine bone density measurements may be difficult to interpret
- within a year of previous measurement
