In these disease true bone forms outside the skeleton, usually within muscles and connective tissue.
Initially inflamed muscle is infiltrated with bone matrix which subsequently becomes mineralised.
Disability results from the progressive immobility and fixation of joints.
Ectopic bone ossification disorders may be acquired or congenital.
