Contra-indications

What is permissible in each patient will vary. However, general situations in which open reduction of a fracture are contra-indicated include:

• active infection or osteomyelitis
• osteoporosis - bone too weak for internal fixation devices to be secure
• fracture fragment too small to allow attachment of an internal fixation device
• increased risk of surgery from features of surrounding soft tissue - acute soft tissue infection, burns, severe scarring - or from patients overall health
