There is a history of an injury where the joint has been abnormally twisted or bent into an abnormal position.
On examination the joint is painful and swollen. The tissues may be bruised. Tenderness is localized to the injured ligament. Tensing the tissues on the side of the sprained ligament causes a sharp increase in pain.
