Each vertebra has two transverse processes projecting laterally or posterolaterally from the junction of pedicle and lamina.
Transverse processes have a strengthening role by virtue of ligamentous attachment to apposed vertebra. However, their key role is as points of attachment for intrinsic and extrinsic spinal muscles in order to increase mechanical advantage.
Where a rib articulates with the vertebra, the transverse process has an articulating facet.
