Investigations
Syndactyly rarely warrants extensive investigation. However, after assessing the patient’s extremity, multiplanar radiographs of the affected hand or foot are indicated. X-rays evaluate for osseous fusion of the phalanges and/or metacarpals and assess for possible supernumerary digits that may have not been noticed on physical examination.
The condition of the flexor and extensor tendons may be assessed by using ultrasonography or MRI scanning. The pattern of the digital arteries may be ascertained by angiography or digital subtraction angiography.
