Effects peculiar to children

Authoring team

The fact that there may be therapeutic and toxic drug effects peculiar to children is amply demonstrated by:

  • corticosteroids and growth - IV steroids producing cushingoid dwarves. Inhaled steroids were a breakthrough in combating this.
  • amphetamine in the treatment of hyperkinetic children. Amphetamine focuses attention on the task in hand in children, whereas in adults it would probably reduce attention.
  • aspirin in children may predispose to Reye's syndrome
