Associated conditions

When compared to exomphalos , associated anomalies or syndromes are rare in gastroschisis (1).

• gastrointestinal tract is involved mainly with 10-15 % of cases having an associated intestinal atresia
• this may be due to intrauterine volvulus or to interruption of blood supply resulting from compression of part of the exposed bowel in a tight defect in the abdominal wall.
• Meckel's diverticulum and intestinal duplication have also been noted

There is said to be an association with Beckwith Wiedemann syndrome
