A gene probe is a characterized gene, or part of a gene, which is complementary to a given DNA sequence. The former is used to look for the latter by mixing the two. The DNA must first be made ready for binding; for example, it may require denaturing into single stranded molecules.
DNA probes are integral to Southern blotting and the isolation of DNA.
