Meconium ileus is a cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction caused by inspissated meconium. It is a neonatal manifestation in up to 20% of infants with cystic fibrosis.
The inspissated meconium obstructs the small intestine at the level of the terminal ileum. If left untreated, the prognosis is poor.
A related disorder known as meconium ileus equivalent may occur in later life.
