Causes of an increased bilirubin load include:

  • increased volume of red cells:
    • twin-twin transfusion
    • maternal-foetal transfusion
    • small for dates
    • delayed cord clamping
  • reduced red cell survival - haemolysis
  • extravascular blood - bruising, cephalhaematoma
