Contraindications include heart block.

Side effects are similar to those for procainamide i.e. nausea, diarrhoea, rashes, fever, myocardial depression, heart failure, an SLE like syndrome, and, after prolonged treatment, agranulocytosis. In addition there may be ventricular arrhythmia, thrombocytopaenia and haemolytic anaemia.
