The legal definition of stillbirth in England and Wales is that of a foetus delivered after the 24th week of gestation with no sign of life after complete expulsion.

The stillbirth rate decreases as the quality of care throughout pregnancy improves in a population.

  • There were 4,478 baby deaths in the UK in 2023, of which 2,545 were stillbirths (1)
